Her stepfather was addicted to alcohol and left the girl in charge of her two younger brothers. Meanwhile, her once-friendly neighbors are becoming increasingly estranged, and rumors are spreading. "Aunt" Tafa does everything she can to help Lilian by getting her out of town, but even "Aunt" can't escape the cloud of terror that sweeps over Elandsdoorn. She wonders if the community's unreasonable exclusion had something to do with her mother's illness and her sister's death, and Chanda seeks her answers, but she is met with stubborn silence. When Chanda can no longer bear the burden of keeping her secret, she confronts deep-rooted, unspoken taboos. As part of the Human Rights Watch Film Festival here in Toronto, my lovely wife and I headed to the TIFF Lightbox to see "Life, Above All." The film is a South African film, and the synopsis says it's about "a young girl (Chanda) who struggles to maintain a semblance of normalcy amidst complete instability in a small South African town ravaged by AIDS." This is the story of Her stepfather is an alcoholic, her newborn sister recently died, and her mother is infected with the AIDS virus.. 

The community turns against her family and Chanda's best friend Esther, who has to rely on "prostitutes" to earn her money after the death of her parents. This story is powerful and a snapshot of the devastation that HIV/AIDS can cause. However, I think there were some aspects that I could glean from this movie that weren't covered in other reviews. One review said the film was "a somewhat gentle nod to a conscientious liberal audience with a soft spot for beauty and poverty." Every movie has a story and a message. Even those cheesy popcorn action movies have a message being portrayed. There is no story without meaning or multiple meanings. So how do filmmakers tell stories and frame messages? When it comes to poverty, HIV, war, and other human rights issues, the stories are usually told through "adorable" children. Watch the movie "Life Above All" online. 

That was my comment after watching the movie. 'How can we tell a different story about HIV/AIDS?' Or, for that matter, a different story about South Africa, or Africa as a larger body. How often are stories told of children triumphing over the brutal odds of Africa? Or the brutal slums of India? I don't know if there's anything inherently wrong with telling these stories.

What Human Rights Watch said in its short presentation was absolutely correct. HIV/AIDS is very much a human rights issue, even if it is often presented as merely a medical problem. The disease affects those most at risk (due to gender, location, disability, globalization, etc.) who have the least access to treatment due to their vulnerability. Therefore, it is important that the stories of children and women bear the brunt.
