Germany's shipping industry faces a wave of bankruptcies in the coming months as funding gradually dries up and daily growing economic problems around the world lead to a sharp decline in container trade.

With nearly 100 shipping funds already suspended in Germany, the long-simmering global container shipping crisis is finally coming to a head. Another 800 funds are also at risk of bankruptcy. So says Hamburg consultant TPW.

And best of all, you're not alone with this problem. Just last week, Britain's oldest shipowner, Stephenson Clark, whose history dates back to 1730, faced liquidation, marking the final chapter in Britain's coal trade and its associated industrial revolution from this country's perspective. He cited "incredibly exorbitant" shipping charges as the reason. The company invested too much in the boom of about four years ago and relied too much on the China syndrome.
