Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was injured days after taking a bit of a hit against the Green Bay Packers on Monday night. Cutler was injured, but the early advantage provided by the Bears' new offense provided some relief.

The Chicago Bears are currently 3-0 and the only undefeated team in the NFC, with their offense showing highlights under new coordinator Mike Mertz.

"We're growing, we're still young, and we're still pretty young in this offense," Cutler said. "I think Mike is still trying to figure out exactly where we are, what we can say in certain situations, what we can do from week to week in terms of game planning, and what we can do during the game." Even Martz doesn't know how good the Bears' offense is.

"I really don't know; that's the interesting part," he said. “It’s exciting because we have plenty of talent here and are getting better every week.”

The Bears seem to have no trouble making big plays, ranking fifth in that category with 12 completions of 20 yards or more. But when he needed a yard at the goal line in the fourth, like in the opener against Green Bay and Detroit, he couldn't get it.

“I think we saw glimpses of it,” tight end Greg Olsen said. "I think we have some guys who can make big plays and get big yards each. We're by no means a finished product. We still have a lot of work to do, but we're getting a little bit more consistent in certain areas. "But I think we've seen at times that if we play well and do what we set out to do, we have a chance to do pretty well."

Cutler, the fifth-best passer in the league, has clearly been a good fit in Martz's offensive system so far. He averages more yards per completion (9.6) than anyone else, and his 109.7 rating is behind only Peyton Manning of the Colts and Michael Vick of the Eagles. Most importantly, he holds the ball well and has only thrown two interceptions since throwing a league-leading 26 pitches a year ago. But his pitch in the first quarter against Green Bay was a reminder that the Bears are still a work in progress. This also applies to the hits he took early and late in the game.

A direct hit from the Packers' Frank Zombio in the fourth quarter left Cutler feeling slightly dizzy, and the league fined Zombo $7,500. The incident also nullified an interception by Green Bay linebacker Nick Barnett. "Some people hope that the next fight will be successful, but that doesn't always happen," Cutler said. "These punches are hard when they hit you under the chin but also on the head. And you know you have to get back quickly. The clock is ticking. On third down. It could be a second down; it could be a second down; you just never know. It was an important part of the game where we had to go score, so it was an added bonus to the game. It's just another challenge."

Whether they can get where they want remains to be seen. It's too early in the season to talk about that. But so far, there are encouraging signs that suggest they could be a formidable offensive line as the season progresses.

The Chicago Bears have a +200 lead, which ranks second in NFC North wins behind Green Bay's -175. +600 for winning the NFC Championship and +1500 for winning the Super Bowl.
